How to ensure data security in IoT devices
2022.06.08

If you think the number of IoT devices has increased significantly, then project how the amount of data they produce has grown. The massive increase in IoT devices is driving a massive increase in data. From connected cars and fitness trackers to smart homes and factories, our lives and workplaces are filled with IoT devices.

All in all, there are now billions of these IoT around the world, and they are generating data by the zettabyte (which is simply the number one followed by 21 zeros). All this data has greatly expanded the attack surface, making it harder for companies to protect themselves. As a result, the IoT is today a huge opportunity for hackers, presenting them with a gold mine of data and many new vulnerabilities that may not be adequately secure or, worse, not even known.

Business survival

IoT devices now manage our business, run our appliances and control our healthcare systems. Any loss of functionality or data from these devices can significantly impact business — even human life — than any computing system that has come before.

Companies must be able to protect their IoT data, and if there is a breach or downtime, they must be able to restore it as quickly and efficiently as possible. If they can't, they could be putting the very survival of the business at risk.

Arcserve points out three ways to successfully protect IoT data and prevent loss:

1. Get visibility across all your IoT devices

The biggest issue with IoT device security lies in the fact that they are not secure in nature. Most are designed with ease of use, low price, and connectivity in mind, with no built-in security controls. Updates and patches are rare, which means they are an attractive target for hackers.

The first step towards better security is knowing the exact number of IoT devices on your network and keeping a detailed inventory of all connected assets to establish strong password security. Many devices come with weak pre-set passwords, so every time an IoT device is connected to your network, be sure to reset the installed password with a more complex and secure one.

It is also critical to implement a patch management program. Unlike most IT systems, IoT devices do not receive regular software updates to fix security flaws. That means it's up to you to establish a regulated patch management upgrade strategy to prevent data loss.

2. Double your data protection

Another essential means to protect IoT data is the 3-2-1-1 data protection strategy. The strategy dictates that you have three backup copies of your data on two different media (such as disk and tape), with one of those copies located off-site for better disaster recovery. The last in this equation is the storage of immutable objects. Immutable object storage protects IoT data by continuously taking snapshots of it every 90 seconds. With immutable snapshots, organizations with IoT devices can avoid downtime and ensure smooth, uninterrupted delivery of services and operations — even during a disaster or ransomware attack.

3. Choose the right partners

The IoT landscape is rapidly changing, with many new devices hitting the market every day. Thus, it is crucial to select data storage/retrieval vendors and partners that are agile and sophisticated enough to adapt to changes and keep data secure.

This speaks not only to large, but also to small businesses. Managing this data and retrieving it in times of crisis is vitally important to getting your business back up and running, regardless of its size.

A final note: when the internet came along, companies first discovered that it produces a lot of data. So they learned how valuable that data is and then they worry about protecting that data. IoT is following the same trajectory. It can be an important competitive differentiator for the company to understand how vital it is to protect the data produced by the IoT devices on its network.
